Dialogues by James Beckel, Mvt 1, A Sense of Urgency

This chamber work was commissioned by the Ronen Chamber Ensemble. Apologies if the score doesn’t always sync with the music. It goes by so fast! It is a four-movement piece, and you will hear the first movement. If you stick around till the end, you will see a picture of the performers. They are amazing, proving that this difficult work is not impossible to play.

Gardens of Stone - James Beckel | U.S. Coast Guard Band

The title of James Beckel’s Gardens of Stone refers to the resting places of our nation’s fallen heroes. Narration is performed by Adm. Thad Allen, 23rd Commandant of the Coast Guard, and includes the inspiring words of President Ronald Reagan, General Dwight Eisenhower, and President Abraham Lincoln.

The piece begins with a quiet growth of sound representing a “Sunrise at Arlington Cemetery.” “Past Battles” is depicted by more agitated, repetitive music that evokes both the human force of determination and the percussive force of artillery. The use of the Civil War song “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again” represents the prayer that all soldiers in harm’s way might return home safely. The battle culminates with a shortened “21 Gun Salute”, and an embellished version of “Taps”, which portrays our heavy-hearted response. Abraham Lincoln’s words usher in more hopeful sounds. He speaks of Gettysburg as the battlefield and burial ground, symbolic of all the final resting places of our fallen soldiers, and consecrated by “the last full measure of devotion” displayed by those lost. These sacred places of honor renew the promise of freedom on which our great nation was founded. Gardens of Stone pays tribute to military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the United States of America.
